Dave: Basically with great anticipation !! I mean it's not everyday
that you get told that your going to play with a band that you looked up
to when you were younger. It should be the best gig ever, I can't
wait to meet and drink piss with them. I know it's gonna be a fucking
awesome night.
Aidan: Can't fucking wait, It's so great that an act like Impaled
Nazarene is coming all the way over here. Perth hasn't seen a gig
like this ever. We were fucking stoked when we got asked to do the
show. It'll be the first non-local band we've ever supported. I can't
wait to meet them. It's such an honour and we've got a pretty cool
set planned for it as well. I reckon it's gonna be a fucking awesome
show.
2) You played your first gig together with your new line-up
at the Metalfest, how did that go?
Dave: It was great. We've been rehearsing for months now,
putting new and old songs together to be able to play live again.
I wasn't sure how we would go because there is huge difference between
rehearsing and playing live, but I feel that we kept it together pretty
well and the crowd seemed to welcome us back to the live scene with enthusiasm,
which is a great feeling.
Aidan: I was really fucking happy with it. The crowd response
was great. The musicianship within the band has increased ten-fold
since the extensive line-up changes. Things are so fresh and new
now. The line-up changes really worked out joy. These days, we are
all striving for much the same goal, which is to have a good time and make
music which means something to us. Where not in it for the fame or
the money. I'd like to think that we're in it more for the freedom
of expression and the sheer fun of it all.....And maybe the chicks.
3) I've heard rumours of a new demo, or even possibly a
full release, is there truth behind these rumours?
Aidan: Well, we do have quite a bit of new material, and are looking
to record quite soon but the original plan of action was to release a third
demo, then release a limited edition CD with all of our demo's on it, but
at the rate at which we seem to be churning out new material, it could
possibly end up being a full length CD, but we'll have to wait and see.
Dave: Well, yeah we do have plans to release a new demo soon
and from the way the new shit is sounding and how fast it is being written,
we will have a mind blowing, in your face, up your ass new demo!!
I can't wait to record again it makes all the months of rehearsing worthwhile,
and lets people appreciate all the work that you've put.
4) Over the last 12 months a fair bit has changed in the
local scene, what are your thoughts on the local scene?
Aidan: I've noticed there is a much better vibe at metal gigs
now than there used to be. Especially when you've got great people
like the Deathflesh and the Western Front crew working hard to help show
the rest of this town, what a great wealth of local talent we have in the
metal scene. But I don't think that the metal scene has changed nearly
as much in the last 12 months as it did around '97. Bands like Hate
Man Tribe, Moth, Fatal Array and Grimoire, not to mention Allegiance, all
called it quits for some reason. And for a while, a metal gig was
an event that occurred once every few months. Then, from out of nowhere
all these brutal bands started showing up on the local scene. Bands like
Erebus, Pagan, Enforce, Kin and Impact Winter all started doing gigs around
this time, not to mention the return of Choke to the live scene after several
years, and Plague, a band that blew my fucking head off the first time
I saw them play.
Dave: Well to sum it up, FUCKING INSANE!!! The last metalfest
last on the 18th of June was a gig that reminded me of how excellent Perth
bands are getting. We've all been around for a while now and gotten
used to playing live so the results are starting to show. Little
over 18 months ago you would walk into a pub and see the bands and a few
friends sitting around with no atmosphere. Today you walk in and
see heaps of sick fuckers getting drunk and moshing to great bands.
I love it. It can only get better!
6) How does the new Pathogen material differ from your older music, what goes into creating a Pathogen song?
Aidan: Well some people said our first demo sounded like mid
80's thrash, other people said it had an almost cock rocky feel, I can't
see it myself but I won't deny it. We were 15 when we started the
band and our musical ability and tastes have evolved so much in the last
four years. Our newer material is a lot more diverse than it used
to be. We really like to branch out and explore new musical possibilities,
for instance, we have some songs which are very technical and others which
are quite simple but still have a great feel about them. The next demo
will have everything from blast beats to acoustic interludes, but we still
put a lot of ourselves in the music. It's the emotions that we put
into it that makes it "our music".
Dave: For starters the new line-up creates a totally new feeling
when coming up with new material. We all have a different style of
playing but a similar taste in music which blends quite well together.
When writing, we try to add some of our own emotions and feelings into
a soundscape that moves people to the way we feel, whether it be bang your
head against the stage or to stand and be ensorcelled by an epic journey.
7) Anything you'd like to say to Western Front readers
and Pathogen fans?
Aidan: I hope to see you all at Impaled Nazarene. This is far
too rare an event, and by pledging your support, we can push to make this
kind of thing happen more often.
Dave: Sex, drugs and deathmetal forever!!!
